Dizziness: Similar Symptoms
Is it dizziness? Is it actually a feeling of loss of balance or movement? There are various similar symptoms:
- Giddiness
- Lightheadedness. This is the feeling where the brain is not getting enough blood flow, and starts to lose some touch with reality.
- Faintness (fainting). This is very similar to lightheadedness.
- Vertigo. This is the feeling that the room is spinning, or moving in a direction, which tends to be more severe than “mere” dizziness.
- Balance symptoms
Similar Symptoms: Other symptoms that are not really types of dizziness, but may be related to the brain and the organs of balance, include:
- Aura. A feeling of “brain fuzziness” that may precede certain brain conditions such as migraine.
- Hypoglycemia. As the brain gets too little sugar, various strange perceptions occur and can be like an aura or lightheadedness.
- Hypotension (low blood pressure). This can cause dizziness or lightheadedness.
- Intoxication. This may cause dizziness (or accompany it), but isn’t quite the same thing.
- Incoordination. Having difficulty with coordination is not the same, although they can occur together.
- Concentration symptoms.
- Gait symptoms. Problems with walking or posture often accompany dizziness, but there are other causes.
There are various causes of these different symptoms. The need to correctly identify the exact symptom is helpful to diagnosis.
